What are Schuessler Salts?
Schuessler Salts, or Biochemic Tissue Salts, are natual healing remedies discovered by German physician and a homeopath, dr Wilhelm Heinrich Schuessler, in the 19th century. According to dr Schuessler, disease will develop only when there is a disbalans of the minerals levels in the body. We need quantitative and qualitative balance of tissue salts to stay healthy, and every excess or lack of minerals will lead to diseases and health problems.

Tissue Salts 1-12 are called basic Tissue Salts, and numbers 13 – 33 are called additional salts.
There is a difference in numbering system of tissue salts, depending on the country or producer of tissue salts. The difference exsists because dr Schuessler eliminated tissue salt Calcium Sulphuricum from the system. Later research confirmed the importance ot this tissee salt, and it was brought back to the system. In European countries, European numbering system prevails, where Calcium Sulphuricum is placed on the last place of the 12 tissue salts list, while in the US and English speaking countries, an American numbering system is in use, where tissue salt Calcium sulphuricum is placed on the third place, according to the alphabetical order of the first 12 tissue salts. American numbering system of tissue salts is therefore easier to memorise. Make sure you always use the name of the tissue salt, alongside number of tissue salts 3-12, when buying these, so that you wouldn’t get the wrong tissue salt.
Additional tissue salts, from number 13-33, are discovered only after the time of dr Schuessler, and are very important remedies for health functioning of our bodies.
Who was dr. Schuessler?
Wilhelm Heinrich Schuessler was born in 1821 in Bad Zwischenahn near Oldenburg, Germany. In his thirtieth year, he began studying medicine. During his studies he devoted himself more and more to homeopathy. As a homeopath, dr Schuessler opened his first independent practice in 1858. Until then, only about 700 homeopathic remedies were known. Having learned that minerals are important for metabolism, he begins his research work. Studying the ashes of the deceased, he concluded that the cause of death was often associated with a lack of vital inorganic salts (minerals), and discovered the 12 most important ones that he prepared as homeopathic preparations. He had a lot of success in treatment solely because of the use of 12 minerals, which prompted him to write his work An Abridged Therapy: Manual for the Biochemical Treatment of Disease. Dr Schuessler was convinced that all diseases were curable with the proper use of minerals.
Three principles of Biochemic Tissue salts are:
- the smallest living unit is a cell
- the cause of the disease is in the altered cell
- a person can stay healthy only if he/she has the necessary minerals present in the body in the right quantity.
What are the similarities and differences between homeopathy and Schuessler Salts?
Homeopathy is an effective method of treatment that stimulates the natural healing abilities of the human body. Homeopathy holds that all conditions of disturbed health are a reflection of disturbed vital force, and that a person should be treated, not the disease. Substances that cause certain symptoms in healthy people can be used in the treatment of people in whom these symptoms are in some cases characteristic. Homeopathic remedies are made from plants, animals, minerals sources.
The basic principle of homeopathy is: “Similia Similibus Curentur”, “Like cures like”.
Schuessler supported and used homeopathy in his treatments, but did not fully agree with the principles of homeopathy. He believed that the cause of the disease should be sought in the foundation, in the cell, the smallest living unit in the body. If we are talking about a lack of minerals in the body, then the principle of similarity cannot be applied.
The basic principle applies to Schuessler’s salts: “Health is a quantitative balance of minerals, and disease is caused by an imbalance of minerals.”
Schuessler’s salts are made only in standard potencies D3, D6 and D12 (depending on the salt), while homeopathic remedies are produced in various potencies, and a homeopath needs to choose a potency for a client. Schuessler’s salts are made in the form of tablets, while homeopathic remedies are usually prepared in granules.
Can I overdose from Schuessler Salts?
With standard dosing, overdose is not possible, even if a larger amount of tablets is taken. People who are sensitive to milk sugar may have a milder laxative effect. But then contact your Schuessler Salt Advisor who will explain how you can use Tissue salts without melting the tablets in your mouth. There is a special method of dissolving tablets that is applied in such cases.
Schuessler salts number 1-12 can be taken up to 15 tablets a day (caution is only needed in a few cases, as your Consultant for Schuessler Salts will inform you about these). But if you accidentally consume any of them in an amount that is more than 15 tablets a day, the excess salt will simply be excreted out of the body and there will be no harmful consequences for you.
CAUTION – If you suffer from high blood pressure and are taking medicine for hypertension, it is important to be careful not to take more than 7 tablets of Natruim chloratum (muriaticum) tissue salt in one day! This tissue salt is effective in lowering blood pressure and is recommended for people suffering from these problems, but if you are already taking hypertension therapy, a maximum of 7 tablets of Natrium chloratum salt per day is allowed, so as not to lower blood pressure levels too much. .
Schuessler salts number 13-33 are available in potency D12 and are taken up to a maximum of 5 tablets per day. These tissue salts are present in the human body in traces, so only 5 tablets are enough to balance the level of these salts in the body. But if you accidentally consume any of them in an amount that is more than 5 tablets a day, the excess salt will simply be excreted out of the body and there will be no harmful consequences for you.
Is there a danger of overdoing or developing side effects from Schuessler Salts?
After you take your first therapy, your symptoms may get slightly worse, but this is not so common. This sign is often positive because it tells us that the body is accelerating its healing mechanism, that is, that the period of “cleansing” has begun. The symptoms of the disease that you normally have usually appear, but they are much milder and do not last long, followed by the improvement and disappearance of the usual symptoms of the disease. Schuessler’s salts cannot cause the allergic reactions that are common with allopathic medications.
If you take Schuessler Salts too often or for too long, there will be no negative consequences for you, but the excess salt will be eliminated from your body. In Schuessler’s salts there is no so-called drug proving effect, which is possible in homeopathy.
In case of doubt about the use of Schuessler’s salts or their possible effects on your mental or physical condition, consult your Schuessler’s salt consultant, doctor or pharmacist.
Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a doctor and consultant for Schuessler’s salts before using them, who will make you a quarterly salt use program. Different salts are used in different months of pregnancy so it is important to follow the instructions of your Schuessler Salt Advisor. Be sure to tell your doctor who is managing your pregnancy that you would like to use Schuessler’s salts and ask for his or her opinion. Every pregnancy is unique and therefore a personal approach is needed when choosing salt for a pregnant woman.
How many Shuessler Salts can I take together?
If necessary, you can take all Schuessler’s salts together, if there is a significant deficiency of all tissue salts in the body. Your Consultant for Schuessler Salt will recommend how much tissue salts you need to take and there is no limit to their number. There are also products on the market that already contain a combination of 12 basic tissue salts, which is very effective in treating any ailment, and can also be taken as a disease prevention (especially during the flu season) – two tablets a day for children, and 5 tablet for adults. If your Consultant for Schuessler Salt is qualified for a facial analysis, you can ask him to do a facial analysis, which will show the level of all tissue salts in the body. The deficiency of each individual salt is seen on a person’s face as well as the level of deficiency of each tissue salt.
How is facial analysis performed?
If your Consultant for Schuessler Salts is qualified for a facial analysis, he or she can perform a facial analysis to determine the condition of each tissue salt in the body (deficiency or excess) and the degree of the imbalance.
You need to come to the face analysis appointment without makeup so that your consultant can see the colour of your face and all the signs on it. The consultant will most likely take a photo of you so that you can enlarge certain parts of your face on the computer and better analyze your face. The consultant for Schuessler Salt and Facial Analysis, who is qualified to read facial signs on your face, does not use any devices for this analysis, but does so solely by observing your face, directly by observing your face, or via a computer image. Upon completion of the analysis, you will receive a list of all Schuessler Salts and the condition of each of them in the body, as well as a recommendation for daily use.
Can I take Schuessler Salts alongside homeopathy and Bach flower remedies?
Simultaneous use of these is possible and desirable. Dr. Schuessler was convinced that in treatment it was very important to activate the body’s defense mechanism with homeopathic remedies. Small amounts of minerals in the blood can give initial signals to activate the defense mechanism. Mineral salts can help other therapies get to the cell faster and start working.
Should I stop using allopathic medicine if I am using Schuessler Salts?
If you are currently taking the therapy prescribed by your doctor, it is important that you inform him of your decision to use Schuessler’s salts. The use of Schuessler salts usually does not require discontinuation of the medications and other therapies you use. The decision to reduce or stop taking other medicines or therapies you are using should be made only after consulting the doctor who prescribed such treatment or therapy.
The Consultant for Schuessler Salts does not diagnose or prescribe classical medicine, never advises a client to discontinue or change therapy prescribed by his or her doctor, and never advises a client to use Schuessler Salts as a substitute for classical medicine. In the case of urgent and life-threatening conditions, the consultant will refer the client to a doctor immediately and will not advise the client to treat such conditions with Schuessler’s Salts.
Schuessler Salts are not a substitute for direct medical or psychological therapy. You as a client have a responsibility to seek qualified help for any medical condition, symptoms, or other problems that require professional intervention. If the counselor sees that you need additional help, I will draw your attention to it, but his role is not to recognize and treat any mental or physical illnesses and conditions, to make diagnoses, or to prescribe conventional medicine. If your consultant for Schuessler Salt recommends that you seek additional professional help, it is your sole responsibility to seek it.
Can I become addicted to Schuessler Salts?
Addiction or dependence on Schuessler Salts is not possible. The body only compensates for the lack of necessary substances or expels the excess of undesirable substances (such as aluminum). When you feel the need to take tissue salt, it means that the body has not yet settled the required amount of these salts. When you happen to forget to take tissue salts, or no longer feel the need to take them, that body is just telling you that now the level of those salts is balanced.
Schuessler’s salt therapy in some chronic conditions or diseases sometimes lasts a longer period (3, 6, 12 months or longer), but even then you will not develop an addiction to them. If you are afraid that you may become addicted to them, you can stop taking them at any time and you will see that no side effects will occur as a result. It is not necessary to gradually reduce the number of tablets you take to stop using them, as is the case with some allopathic medicines. You can completely stop your therapy at any time, without fear that it will cause unwanted consequences for your body. You will only stop nourishing your body with these tissue salts.
Can I take Schuessler Salts if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
Schuessler’s salts are recommended in pregnancy so that both mother and a baby get enough of all the necessary tissue salts. But be sure to contact your consultant for Schuessler Salts who will prepare for you a tissue salts program for each trimester. Different salts are used in different months of pregnancy so it is important to follow the instructions of your consultant for Schuessler Salts. Be sure to tell your doctor who is managing your pregnancy that you would like to use Schuessler’s Salts and ask for his or her opinion. Every pregnancy is unique and therefore a personal approach is needed when choosing salt for a pregnant woman.
The salts you take during pregnancy and breastfeeding pass to your baby. Be sure to consult your doctor as well as your consultant for Schuessler Salts before using them. Various recommendations for the use of Schuessler Salts for pregnant women and babies can be found on the Internet and in various books, but their independent use for pregnant and breastfeeding women is not recommended without prior consultation with experts. The Schuessler Salt Program recommended by your counselor, and approved by your doctor or pediatrician, can be of great benefit to you and your baby!
Is is safe for babies and children to take Schuessler Salts?
Babies and children can also take Schuessler Salts and they are very useful in the first months of a child’s life as they effectively help with colic, teething, lowering fever and other ailments. The tablets can be taken dissolved in a bottle or in baby food, soaked in a little water. If the baby is breastfed, the mother can take tissue salts herself, and dissolve them under the tongue while breastfeeding the baby, and the tissue salts will reach the baby through the milk.
The method of taking Schuessler’s salts is the same for children as for adults, except that the number of tablets a child takes per day will be adjusted to the child’s age. Schuessler’s salt tablets have a sweet taste and melt quickly under the tongue, so children love to use them.
Can I use Schuessler Salts if I have hypertension?
Schuessler Salt Natrium chloratum (muriaticum) is effective in lowering blood pressure and is recommended for people suffering from these ailments. Caution is needed if you are already taking blood pressure lowering medications – then a maximum of 7 tablets of Natrium chloratum salt per day is allowed, so that the blood pressure level does not drop excessively. If you suffer from high blood pressure and drink therapy to reduce blood pressure, it is so important to make sure that you do not take more than 7 tablets of Natruim chloratum (muriaticum) tissue salt per day!
Is it safe to take Schuessler Salts if I have a thyroid disorder?
Schuessler Salts are very effective in balancing thyroid hormones and are an excellent support even if you are already using thyroid medications. You will be advised which Schuessler Salts are good for you, depending on your ailments, that is, depending on whether you suffer from hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Different combinations of salts are used, so by no means try to prescribe therapy to yourself based on the data you read in books or on the internet. If you are currently taking the therapy prescribed by your doctor, it is important that you inform him of your decision to use Schuessler’s Salts. The use of Schuessler’s Salts usually does not require discontinuation of the medications and other therapies you use. The decision to reduce or stop taking other medicines or therapies you are using should be made only after consulting the doctor who prescribed such treatment or therapy.

Whaz if I don’t see a progress in my therapy with Schuessler Salts?
If you notice that there is no improvement in your condition, pay attention to your life habits, or other external influences.
Possible obstacles in Schuessler Salts therapy are:
- excessive intake of alcohol, drugs, coffee and cigarettes
- poor and inadequate nutrition
- mental strain, stress, fear
- prolonged stay in places with high electromagnetic radiation or exposure to harmful and toxic substances
- in some diseases where there is an irreversible change in the organs or their damage, healing with tissue salts cannot be expected.
Wha are some numbers of Schuessler Salts different?
During his research, Dr. Schuessler eliminated Calcium sulfuricum from his system and concluded a list of 11 tissue salts. Later, biochemical associations in Europe added Calcium sulfuricum to the list because it is a very important mineral for our body. German-speaking countries have added Calcium sulfuricum to the end of the list as salt number 12, and English-speaking countries have added it alphabetically to number 3. Therefore, when buying Schuessler salts, be careful to look for salts by their names, not by number, and be sure to make sure you get the correct salt.
Schuessler Salts No. 13 to 33 were discovered after the time of Dr Schuessler, due to the development of technology that was not available to Dr Schuessler in his time. Therefore, we call these salts “higher numbers” or “additional tissue salts”. These tissue salts are present to a lesser extent in our body, but still play a very important role in maintaining the balance and health of our body. These tissue salts serve as a supplement to the basic numbers, but are also very effective when taken alone. Some of these supplemental salts are particularly effective in treating thyroid disease or gynecological disorders.
